Callum Connell chooses UNiKA PRO 3SP as his PA Pedalboard Partner

Hailing from Manchester, Callum Connell is a multi-instrumentalist majoring in alto, tenor and soprano sax. His extensive touring, production and session portfolio includes work with NONUNONU, Contours, BINA, Greentea Peng, Yoni Maraz and the jazz-inflected, street soul of his own band, Secret Night Gang. Connell makes extensive and creative use of the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme vocal floor pedal – as do fellow brass pioneers Elias Atkinson (Trumpet: Secret Night Gang, Obongjayar, Soweto Kinch) and Jay Phelps (Trumpet: Amy Winehouse, Wynton Marsalis, Shaba Hutchings, Soweto Kinch).

The Voicelive pedal dramatically extends the range of sonic possibilities for brass instruments but special care has to be taken when balancing the wet/dry mix to match hall acoustics. Being loud acoustically, the right level of effect onstage can overpower through the PA.

Enter the UNiKA PRO 3SP, a high quality, 3-way, XLR splitter-box suitable for use with dynamic mics as well as line level signals.

Connell explains: “My favourite touring mic for Sax is the Electro-Voice RE20 and I have been testing out different ways of connecting this to PAs at different venues. The PRO 3SP has two ISO OUT XLRs and a MONITOR out.  In most cases I use the MONITOR out from the UNiKA splitter to feed the TC Helicon MIC input while connecting an ISO OUT directly to the PA stage box. This way the engineer always has access to the dry signal to blend with the main Helicon stereo output if more definition is required”.

Mick Brophy, Business Development Manager at Mega Audio adds: “Callum is a world-class player doing groundbreaking work at the highest level. It’s is great that he has chosen the UNIKA PRO 3SP to make the most of his EV RE 20 mic and TC Helicon floor pedal set-up. He has toured the PRO 3SP for an extraordinarily busy year and with no issues – a testament to the UNiKA Pro build quality”.

The PRO 3SP is part of the extensive UNiKA PRO range which incorporates advanced USB and Bluetooth interfaces alongside passive and active instrument DI boxes and passive multi-media DIs and Splitters.
